For a kid who has just moved to a different country, their whole world has been turned upside-down. They might be looking for something to hold onto. You, as a teacher or educator, could be the one consistent thing in their life.
Think about it - kids spend a lot of hours in school. For refugee students, it is often the place where they learn about assimilating into a new culture, which comes with both triumphs and pitfalls. A trusted adult can make a world of difference in navigating this challenge.
Maybe it is saying hi to them every morning, even if they don't say hi back. Maybe it is just being present - many people have come and gone in their lives, and sticking around says something. Maybe it is asking them to check in or hang their jacket up or get their book out every afternoon. Whatever it is, routine can bring a sense of safety, and one day, they just might say hi back.
